Introduction

Shri 1008 Digambar Jain Mandir is located in Mitthan Mohalla, Karnal Sadar Bazaar. It is said that many years ago, there was a Jain king who had undertaken the construction of 225 to 250 Jain temples across India. Wherever he went, he ensured the construction of a Jain temple, and upon completion, he would entrust it to the Jain community. Similarly, when the king visited Karnal, he constructed a temple here also and handed it over to the Jain community. Since then, the temple has been managed by the Jain community. Construction work has been ongoing in the temple from time to time. The renovation of the temple was carried out by the Jain community in 2003 and from January 14th to January 19th, 2005, Panchkalyanak (consecration ceremony) was held in the presence of Shri 108 Saurabhsagar Ji Maharaj. Beautiful Makrana marble has been meticulously used in the temple. Initially, the area of the temple was small. Slowly, due to the increase in the number of devotees, the area of the temple was expanded further. Currently, the area of the temple is extensive, covering 800 square yards.

There are a total of seven Vedi (altar) in the temple. In the six Vedi of the temple, the idols are of Shri Jinendar Bhagwan and in one Vedi, the idol of Padmavati Mata Ji is enshrined. The Mool (main) Vedi of the temple belongs to Shri Parshvanath Ji, and this idol is nearly 225 years old. In the Mool Vedi, there are idols of Shri Mahavir Bhagwan, Shri Vasupujya Bhagwan, Shri Chandraprabhu Bhagwan, Shri Padmaprabhu Bhagwan, and Shri Shantinath Bhagwan, which are 100 to 150 years old. In the second Vedi of the temple, the Moolnayak Pratima (main deity’s idol) of Shri Shitalnath Bhagwan, in the third Vedi, Shri Shantinath Bhagwan, in the fourth Vedi, Mata Padmavati, in the fifth Vedi, Shri Adinath Bhagwan, and in the sixth Vedi, the idol of Shri Mahavir Bhagwan is enshrined. The seventh Vedi of the temple holds a special place because in this Vedi, the Moolnayak Pratima is of Shri 1008 Neminath Bhagwan Ji, which is about 800 years old, is enshrined. It is said that this idol was brought from ‘Bada Gaon’ by a member of the local Jain community and was established here. Darshan of Shri 1008 Neminath Bhagwan Ji's idol is considered very extraordinary.

Beautiful gold work has been done in all the Vedi of the temple. Every day, more than a hundred members of the Jain community come to the temple to perform the ritual of Abhishek (auspicious bath of the idol) and worship the idols. Many times Jain Saints have visited the temple. The first arrival in the temple was fifty years ago by Shri 108 Dharmamuni Ji Maharaj. After that, in 1997, after the relentless efforts of the Jain community, Shri 108 Saurabhsagar Ji Maharaj came to Karnal. His arrival brought a special energy to the area. Currently, the Chaturmas of Shri Pragyansh Sagar Ji is being held in the temple.

Atishay Katha

A highly remarkable event is mentioned here. The Jain community performs the Abhishek in the temple, and like every day, people from the community gather at the temple for the ritual. During those days, Shri 108 Saurabh Sagar Ji Maharaj was staying in the area for the first time. People noticed that the Chhatar (brolly) above the idol was moving on its own, which astonished everyone present there. They all began chanting the Namokar Mantra. They witnessed milk spontaneously pouring over the idol. Upon hearing about this event, Shri Saurabh Sagar Maharaj Ji entered the temple. When Acharya Shri entered the temple, there was a special energy felt among the people. Maharaj Ji moved forward to see the idol, and footprints started forming on the ground where he walked. People standing nearby placed their clean clothes on the ground where the footprints were forming, leaving imprints on their clothes. Acharya Shri Ji reached the spot of the abhishek and paid homage to Bhagwan Jinendra Ji's marvel.

“After this event, people believed that the arrival of the Jain saint was a divine sign from Bhagwan.”

Another extraordinary event occurred in 2023. On the auspicious occasion of the Dashlakshan Parv, the idol of Bhagwan Parshvanath Ji was placed on the Samavsharan by the local Jain community. Some time later, during the Abhishek, people observed that saffron was showering over the idol. This sight left everyone spellbound, and they started chanting Shri Ji's name.

Jain Samaj

In Karnal, the Jain community comprises 250 to 300 families, out of which 70 to 80 families belong to the Digambar Jain community. The management of the temple is efficiently handled by the Digambar Jain community. Within the temple premises, there is a lecture hall, an eight-room guesthouse, and another hall for dining arrangements. If any Jain pilgrim contacts the temple to visit, the temple committee arranges for their stay. The Jain community has also constructed the Shri Digambar Jain Dharmarth Aushadhalaya in the area. Free medicines are provided from 9 AM to 1 PM by Dr. Udvir Singh Rana, and homeopathic services are offered from 5 PM to 8 PM by Dr. Pradeep Chhabra.
