There are several legends associated with the history of the temple, one of which states that its construction took place under the blessings and guidance of Acharya Shri 108 Vidyanand Ji Muni.
The temple is managed by the ‘Shri Digambar Jain Samaj (Regd.)’ committee, which oversees temple operations, religious ceremonies, maintenance, and social initiatives. Introduction
Shri Digambar Jain Temple, Janakpuri, New Delhi, is a prestigious religious site that not only serves as a place of worship but also symbolizes the history, art, and culture of Jainism. Although its current structure is modern, its historical and spiritual significance is deep-rooted. Jain worship has been continuously performed at this site for the past five decades.

It is believed that Acharya Shri first visited this area in 1984. Inspired by his teachings and influence, the foundation stone of the temple was laid in the same year. Various sections of society contributed to the construction of the temple, providing financial support and other resources. Initially, only one Vedi (altar) was built, enshrining the Moolnayak pratima (principal deity) of Shri 1008 Mahavir Bhagwan. The revered idol was brought from Delhi Cantt and enshrined in the temple. Later, under the inspiration of Acharya Shri 108 Virag Sagar Ji Maharaj, the temple underwent renovation. During this time, Acharya Shri, along with his group of over 80 munis, visited the site, giving new energy and direction to the temple's reconstruction. Acharya Shri Virag Sagar Ji Maharaj noted that the name of this region resembled Mithilapuri in Nepal, also known as Janakpur, which holds historical importance as the birthplace of the 19th Tirthankara, Bhagwan Mallinath, and the 21st Tirthankara, Bhagwan Naminath. Motivated by this inspiration, two additional altars were established in the temple, housing the idols of Bhagwan Mallinath and Bhagwan Naminath. Ultimately, the grand Panch Kalyanak Mahotsav was successfully celebrated in February 2023 under the auspicious presence of Acharya Shri Pragya Sagar Ji, marking a significant milestone in the temple’s history. The temple has been constructed using Makrana white marble, enhancing its grandeur and elegance. One of its unique aspects is the depiction of all major Jain pilgrimage sites, making it possibly the only temple in India with such a representation. The principal deity enshrined in the main altar is Shri Mahavir Bhagwan, crafted from white stone. The same altar also houses idols of Shri Adinath Bhagwan and Shri Shantinath Bhagwan, also carved from white stone. Additionally, four idols made of Ashtadhatu (eight-metal alloy) are placed on the same altar. To the left of the main altar, the Vedi of Shri 1008 Mallinath Ji is established, where divine gemstone-studded idols of all 24 Tirthankaras are enshrined in the Samavasarana (preaching assembly). On the right side of the main altar, the Vedi of Shri 1008 Naminath Bhagwan is situated, housing other Ashtadhatu idols. The intricate gold artwork adorning all the altars further enhances the temple’s magnificence. The temple beautifully merges art and architecture, offering devotees a truly divine experience. The Shri Digambar Jain Temple, Janakpuri, stands as a beacon of faith, tradition, and community service, playing a crucial role in preserving and promoting the values of Jainism in the modern era.
Jain Samaj
The temple is located at C2A, Janakpuri, New Delhi-58, and is easily accessible via the nearest metro stations, Dabri and Janakpuri East. Daily rituals such as puja, abhishek, and shanti dhara are performed with devotion and grandeur. Additionally, all major Jain festivals and Tirthankara celebrations are observed with great enthusiasm.
The temple is associated with approximately 150 families, most of whom visit regularly for darshan. On an average day, around 100-150 devotees visit the temple. The temple is managed by a community organization that not only oversees religious activities but also actively participates in social services such as medical camps and other charitable programs. The temple frequently hosts Jain Saints (Muni Maharaj Ji), and it provides well-equipped facilities, including a dharmashala (guest house), a large hall for discourses, and five well-furnished rooms for the stay of Muni and Maharaj Ji.
History
Janakpuri is a prominent residential area in South-West Delhi, well-developed with essential amenities such as schools, hospitals, shopping malls, and public transportation. The temple’s strategic location makes it a significant religious and cultural center for the local Jain community.
