Introduction
Shri 1008 Parshvanath Digambar Jain Chaityalaya is located in Jain Gali, Jhajjar Main Market. The construction of the Chaityalaya was completed about nine hundred years ago. Initially, there was a significant Jain community in the area, but later, with the aim of growth, the focus of the Jain community shifted from rural areas to urban centers. Despite the lower population, regular worship, ablution, and daily Abhishek (auspicious bath of the idol) are conducted in the temple.
The Chaityalaya primarily houses only one Vedi (altar) where the Prachin Pratima (ancient idol) is of the 23rd Jain Tirthankar, Shri 1008 Parshvanath Bhagwan, dating back to 800 to 900 years, is enshrined as the Moolnayak Pratima (main deity’s idol). Alongside the Moolnayak Pratima, the Vedi also contains idols of Shri Parshvanath Bhagwan, Shri Mahavir Bhagwan, Chaubisi Pratima, Shri Shantinath Bhagwan, Shri Kunthunath Bhagwan, and Shri Arhannath Bhagwan made of stone and Ashtadhatu (eight metals). The Chaityalaya premises also ensure the safekeeping of handwritten scriptures and manuscripts. Adjacent to the Chaityalaya, Shri Mahavir Jain High School was established in 1976, providing education from nursery to the twelfth grade. The school is operated by the Parshvanath Mandir Trust, ensuring quality education for students.
Dharamshala
There used to be more than forty Jain families in Jhajjar at one time, but today, the Jain community has reduced to around ten to twelve families. Despite the smaller population, the Jain community actively participates in various activities in the area. Shri Jain Mahavir High School, established by the Jain community, provides education to both Jain and non-Jain children. Additionally, arrangements are made for Pilgrims from distant areas who come to visit Jain temples. Upon prior contact, the Jain community organizes satvik meals for them.
History
Jhajjar is located in the state of Haryana. It is situated approximately 65 kilometers away from Delhi. The town was founded by a farmer named Chhajju. Initially, it was called "Chhajju Nagar," but later it came to be known as Jhajjar. Despite the popularity of the local pottery (Surahi), the town was named Jhajjar. The two main cities in Jhajjar are Bahadurgarh and Beri. Bahadurgarh was established by the Rathi and Jat. Formerly, Bahadurgarh was known as Sarrafabad.
